Pre-Anesthetic Bloodwork is an important service provided to our patients.
What is it?
A blood test that looks at major organs such as the kidneys and the liver which process the toxins in the body. Our pre-anesthetic bloodwork profiles check several different blood values.
What is it?
A blood test that looks at major organs such as the kidneys and the liver which process the toxins in the body. Our pre-anesthetic bloodwork profiles check several different blood values.
- ALT (alanine aminotransferase): enzymes that become elevated with liver disease or injury.
- ALP (alkaline phosphatase); enzymes that become elevated with liver or gall bladder disease, but also can be associated with some hormonal problems and in younger growing pets.
- BUN (blood urea nitrogen): increases can indicate kidney disease or dehydration, while decreases can be associated with liver disease.
- CREAT (creatinine): Increases can indicate kidney disease or dehydration.
- TP (total protein): Abnormal levels can indicate liver, kidney, intestinal disorders or dehydration.
- GLUC (glucose): increased levels can indicate diabetes, while decreased levels can indicate hypoglycemia, liver disease, and certain types of tumors.
- PVC (packed call volume): indicates the amount of oxygen-carrying red blood cells present in blood. A low amount indicates anemia while an increases amount can indicate dehydration.
Why do we do it?
- Anesthetic Safety Pre-anesthetic bloodwork is important for detecting problems in organs that process anesthetic medications. If we see abnormal results, we can make necessary changes to the types of medications used, drug dosage and intravenous fluid amounts to ensure maximum safety. In some cases, pre-anesthetic bloodwork can alert us to patients that cannot be safely anesthetized and may need treatment for their disease prior to undergoing anesthesia.
- Early detection of organ dysfunction Bloodwork can uncover early or hidden disease in a seemingly healthy patient. Addressing a problem before it becomes clinically significant can dramatically affect the quality of the time spent managing most diseases and the financial commitment on the part of the owners.
- Establishing a baseline Pre-anesthetic bloodwork is also an important part of your pet's medical history. Bloodwork has future value because it allows us to have reference points to compare with any abnormality that should come up in the future, thus helping the doctors develop a treatment plan and advise owners on what's to come.
In-House Labs
Along with routine bloodwork, we do heartworm testing, FeLv/ FIV testing, and we also test for specific diseases using stool and urine samples, plus are able to send samples to our reference laboratory for further testing if needed.
Laser Therapy
We can now provide our patients, including our surgical patients, laser therapy to help manage pain and inflammation. This procedure can be done on most inflammatory conditions ranging from arthritis to ear trouble to surgery. We already have some pretty awesome success stories and couldn't be happier to be able to provide this service to our patients!
Drop -Off Appointments
We offer the option of dropping off pets for the doctors to take a look as long as you are a current client. Sometimes if appointment slots are full, or there are urgent patient needs, this can be a useful tool for both the doctor and the pet owner while still getting the problem taken care of in a timely manner. Your pet will be supplied with a comfortable place to rest, food and water if needed, a litter box if required, and will be observed by our staff while they are with us. Dogs will be walked outside throughout the day to allow them to stretch their legs or eliminate bowels. The doctor will examine your pet as usual between scheduled appointment times and you will be called with any info. A drop-off form is required for most patients. Drop- off times will be prearranged with the doctors in advance and times of drop-off/pick up will vary. You will be notified as soon as your pet is ready to go.
Digital Radiology
We have the luxury of digital X-rays. Advantages include time efficiency and the ability to digitally transfer and enhance images. Instead of X-ray film, digital radiography uses a digital image which gives the advantages of immediate image preview and availability.

Boarding
Boarding is another service we can provide for our current clients and their pets that are up-to-date on vaccinations. Our boarding facility isn't that big so reservations often need to be made well in advance, especially for holidays. All boarders can be checked in or out during our regular business hours. (Sorry no weekends) We have everything needed for your pets care unless they are on a special diet, or need to be given medication, in this case you must bring these accordingly. Dogs are let outside into our fenced backyard three times daily during the week and twice on weekends, food, fresh water and treats (if provided) can be given at these times. Cat cages are refreshed twice daily. Many of our employees are in and out of the boarding area throughout the day and will alert a doctor if a problem arises. The kennel assistant is trained to monitor for any abnormality in daily routines and to alert the doctors if a pet needs attention during their stay.
Euthanasia
Unfortunately we all have to deal with tough decisions and sometimes we may need to make the choice to let our pets go in order to prevent or end suffering. It is our hope that in times like these we can provide you with a little comfort and support. We also partner with a company that will go out of their way to help you through tough times such as dealing with euthanasia and deciding if you'd like to have your pets ashes returned to you and if so how. Pet Memories is a company that we trust will take care of your pet in a dignified and respectful way.
We are also able to offer pet paw prints that can be done in our office and sent home the same day. The box they come in has an available slot for you to add a photo of your pet.
